Scenario[]
It appears in legends passed down from father to son, mother to daugher.
When I was but a bright-eyed lad raising hell all day long in the fields, my grandmother would lull me to sleep with tall tales of this fantastic place.
The stories spoke of a land that captivated the hearts of men, sank its claws in, and never let go.
This land took everything away and gave not a single thing back.
It was a land of innumerable tales at times both fanciful and frightening, with heroes and villains of all types and happenings both good and bad.
But should you end up spending too long in that terrible land, before your eyes, fantasy turns to reality, and in no time at all, you find that you’ve become a character yourself.
The tales all start the same way:
“Once upon a time…”
-
El: Ah-ah-CHOO!
Gl: Whoa, man, say it, don’t spray it!
Nene: It’s pretty chilly, isn’t it?
Kukurakan: Out of the frying pan and into the freezer… these temperature changes are starting to get rough.
Cynthia: Ganah, how much longer can we keep this up? I’d feel much more comfortable back on home turf.
Ganah: That makes two of us. I think I know where we are, though. Long ago, I was told of a land that serves as a bridge between all sorts of amazing worlds--the Thicket of Twisted Tales.
Kukurakan: That’s a mouthful. And what makes you so sure that we’re in this Thicket of… whatever you said?
Ganah: Oh, I’m far from sure. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s to trust my instincts, and right now, they’re screaming at me to explore.
Nene: I think we’re used to the routine by now. Right, Kukurakan?
Kukurakan: If it keeps us moving forward, then I’m all for it.
Cynthia: Right, then. Let’s split up and search the area, but don’t stray too far.
El: Roger that!
Ganah: Nothing, huh? Damnit, I can’t make heads or tails out of this maze. I’m not even sure if I know where we came in anymore.
El: The entrance can’t just disappear! That’s against the rules!
Ganah: I don’t think the rules apply here, pal. Looks like we’re stuck for now.
Nene: We could check out that weird-looking book over there. The pulsating light is simply… mesmerizing…
Cynthia: It’s not normal, that’s for sure.
Ganah: Then what are we waiting for?
-
(After touching a book.)
Ganah: Is it… responding to our presence…?
-
(After unlocking all the Chapter 8 Kino quests.)
Cynthia: That looks like the last of them. We’ve amassed quite the collection.
-
El: Whoa! Gl, grab something! The world’s coming apart!
(A blue orb and Warden of the Wood (boss) appears.)
El: W-what was that sound?! You guys heard that, too, right? Please tell me you heard that, too!
Kukurakan: Sounds like a monster to me. A really angry one, at that.
Ganah: Wonder if it leads the local beasts. Let’s check it out.
???: Interlopers polluting our sacred soil… State your intentions at once.
Ganah: Whoa, there! We’re just looking for the way out!
Kukurakan: Are you the one who’s keeping us trapped here?
???: You would be better served asking yourself that question. To break free from your bindings, you must first realize their power over you.
Cynthia: We’ve sunk too far into the trappings of a fantasy world, is that it?
???: The answer you seek is not for others to give.
-
When the spark of life left the giant warden’s eyes, the Thicket of Twisted Tales became altogether different.
Glimmering lights faded away: something divine dissipated; an overpowering smell emerged from every leaf and tree.
Some would call it the sweet scent of rebirth; others would call it the rank stench of decay.
Either way, the exit appeared.
As before, everything went dark, and we were flung yet again into parts unknown.
